How to Properly Grip the Golf Club
The golf grip is a very important part of the golf swing. Why? It’s the only connection between you and the golf club, so the grip must be done correctly. There are a lot of good golfers today with very different swing types, but one thing they all have in common is they all have good grips.
The first thing when getting a good grip is to remember to square the club face or the leading edge. Some golfers also like to call this the “aiming edge” of the golf club.
For the right handed golfer, the fingers of the left hand should be placed across the bottom side of the grip.
As you close your left hand on the golf club a “V” should form between the left thumb and the left index finger. The bottom of this “V” should point somewhere between the chin and the right shoulder. By holding the golf club in the fingers, it will assist you to hinge your wrists during the backswing. The left thumb should not be placed down the center of the grip, but slightly off to the right side.
When placing the right hand onto the golf club grip, you want to be holding the club within your fingers as well. Start by placing the right hand under the grip below the left hand. Place the grip in the “bottom” of your fingers.
When closing the right hand, the thumb of your left hand should fit right inside your right hand palm. The pads of your right hand palm should cover up your left thumb. The right thumb should rest on the left side of the grip and be touching the tip of your right index finger, which is wrapped underneath the grip.
When gripping the golf club, don’t hold the club too tight. Hold it tight enough so the club doesn’t slip through your hands. If you hold the club too tight, your forearms will tense up making it difficult to “feel” the club head. On a scale of 1-10, with 1 being loose and 10 being tight, your grip pressure should be about 6.
Remember, the grip is your only connection to the club, and having the proper grip will lead to a good game of golf.
